Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization (2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011)

WAN optimization provides a range of features to: (1) improve the performance of applications running across the WAN; and (2) reduce the cost of the WAN. The range and scope of features supported by
WAN optimization solutions continue to evolve, typically in support of three high-level needs:
  • Improve the response times as experienced by users of business-critical applications over WAN links or mobile connections, often addressing application performance problems caused by bandwidth constraints, latency or protocol limitations.
  • Assist in maximizing the ROI for WAN bandwidth, and delay costly bandwidth upgrades.
  • Optimize data-center-to-data-center (DC-to-DC) traffic for faster replication and synchronization.

In support of these needs, WAN optimization includes some or all of the following functionality:
  • Generic protocol- and application-protocol specific optimization to minimize the effects of network latency
  • Compression, deduplication or content caching to reduce the bandwidth required to transfer WAN traffic, as well as to improve user access times
  • Traffic identification, prioritization, policing and shaping to ensure acceptable access for missioncritical applications during periods of high traffic load
  • Traffic monitoring and reporting to aid in troubleshooting and network planning
  • WAN path control, WAN virtualization or link load balancing to control traffic forwarding across multiple networks, such as Internet and Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) for resilience and to optimize utilization
  • Direct Internet access via the ability to forward traffic to public cloud services, while still controlling traffic forwarding to privately deployed applications

WAN optimization is typically deployed in-house via physical appliances in a symmetrical solution — that is, the devices are deployed at each end of the network connection, such as in the branch office and the data center. These appliances can also be deployed as virtual appliances or as a cloud resident service. For mobile or remote users, WAN optimization can be deployed as a soft client that runs on individual user devices. Some features, such as HTTP optimization and bandwidth management, can operate in an asymmetrical fashion, allowing deployment at either the branch or data center end of the network.

2016
Riverbed Technology has been recognized as a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization for the 9th Year in a row.
In December 2014, Riverbed was acquired by Thoma Bravo, the same private equity firm that took Blue Coat private in 2012.

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Delivery Controllers (2016, 2015,2014,2013,2012,2010)

Application delivery controllers (ADCs) are generally deployed in the data center and provide functions that optimize delivery of enterprise applications across the network. ADCs provide functionality for both user-to-application and application-to-application traffic. The ADC effectively bridges the gap between the application and underlying protocols and the traditional packet-based networks. The market evolved from load-balancing systems that were developed in the latter half of the 1990s to ensure the availability and scalability of websites. Enterprises use ADCs today to improve the following aspects of their applications:
  • Availability
  • Scalability
  • End-user performance
  • Data center resource utilization
  • Security
2016

Renew Cisco IOS IPSec VPN Certificates from Symantec

I am not sure if there is other better way to do it. There is no good documentation from Cisco or somewhere else regarding how you should do on renewing your ssl certificates once it is expired. Every a couple of years, I have to face this problem,  renewing all routers ssl certificates. As far as I know, you can not renew current existing certificates, you will have to created a new trustpoint , generate new CSR and import a renewed certificate. Actually you can use same trustpoint configuration configured before as long as you are using different trustpoint name.

I recorded those steps again which I did a couple of years ago in following posts:

1. Create a new Trustpoint with new name Symantec2017
Some Basic Information:
  • trustpoint: container to configure and define parameters around the certificate
  • crypto ca trustpoint—Declares the CA that the router should use.
  • subject-name [x.500-name]—Specifies the subject name in the certificate request. If the subject-name subcommand is not used, by default, the router Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) is used. This is used in ca-trustpoint configuration mode.

Check Point VPN Troubleshooting - IKEView Examples

Recently I went through Check Point VPN troubleshooting process with IKEVIEW tool. To download ikeview tool, please click here or Support Center download link.

The IKEView utility is a Check Point tool created to assist in analysis of the ike.elg (IKEv1) and ikev2.xmll (IKEv2 - supported in R71 and above) files.ike.elg and ikev2.xmll files are useful for debugging Site-to-Site VPN and Check Point Remote Access Client encryption failures.

Enabling IKE debug mode on Security Gateway results in verbose encryption-traffic information being written to the $FWDIR/log/ike.elg or $FWDIR/log/ikev2.xmll file. The Security Gateway does not require a restart or reboot after enabling IKE debug mode. The output is written in text format, and can be read with plain-text editor, but is cumbersome to interpret. The IKEView utility's GUI clearly designates IPSec Phase 1 and Phase 2 sections on a per-packet level for both IKEv1 and IKEv2

Here are some steps:

STEP 1
– Clear any existing ike.elg files, this will start a new ike.elg file and rename the old one.
[Expert@FW-CP1:0]# vpn debug trunc
[Expert@FW-CP1:0]# ls -la $FWDIR/log/ike*
STEP 2
– Turn on debug IKE debugging
[Expert@FW-CP1:0]#  vpn debug ikeon
STEP 3
– Clear existing tunnels between the gateways of interest or all tunnels if you don’t care. If there are no tunnels this will force both phase 1 & 2 to be completed. If a tunnel exists then
only Phase 2 may be needed depending on the networks being connected to.
[Expert@FW-CP1:0]# vpn tunnelutil
select option 0 (Delete all IPSec+IKE SA’s for ALL peers and users)
Hit enter
STEP 4
– Trigger a VPN connection
Create a connection to trigger VPN connection that uses command ping, ftp, ssh , http,
STEP 5
– Turn off IKE debugging

[Expert@FW-CP1:0]#  vpn debug ikeoff
STEP 6
– Get the ike.elg file
[Expert@FW-CP1:0]# cd $FWDIR/log/ ike.elg [check date]
either ftp this file off or SCP it out
STEP 7
– Analyze the ike.elg file in IKEView.

Example 1: Successful Phase 1 and Phase 2 with correct encryption domain sent out

Example 2: Phase 1

Example 3: Wrong Encryption Domains sent out from Check Point

Peer will send back  error message which says INVALID-ID-INFORMATION

Example 4: Phase 2 failed with error message INVALID-PAYLOAD-TYPE

Other Commands:

fw tab -t vpn_enc_domain_valid -f -u

"Invalid ID" is a phase II error. During Phase II networks are exchanged along with Phase II authentication parameters. To confirm run the following command when trying to establish the tunnel:
fw tab -t vpn_enc_domain_valid -f -u

That command may not be helpful if you have many VPNs because it does not seperate the encryption domains. But basically this will list the encryption domains that the Checkpoint is sending out. If will probably be a larger subnet than what you have configured. If this is the case, search for "supernetting" in these forums. There are several ways to address the issue.

Basic F5 LTM HTTP Load Balance Configuration (With Firewall)

The BIG-IP® local traffic management system is specifically designed to manage your local network traffic. Local traffic management refers to the process of managing network traffic that comes into or goes out of a local area network (LAN), including an intranet.

A commonly-used feature of the BIG-IP system is its ability to intercept and redirect incoming network traffic, for the purpose of intelligently tuning the load on network servers. However, tuning server load is not the only type of local traffic management. The BIG-IP system includes a variety of features that perform functions such as inspecting and transforming header and content data, managing SSL certificate-based authentication, and compressing HTTP responses. In so doing, the BIG-IP system not only directs traffic to the appropriate server resource, but also enhances network security and frees up server resources by performing tasks that web servers typically perform.

1. Topology
Internet  -- Firewall -- F5 External Network(10.94.112.0) -- F5 Cluster -- F5 Internal Network(10.94.100.0)

2. Create Nodes

Before created nodes health monitor, both nodes show disconnected.

3. Create Nodes Health Monitor
Once Health Monitor created, both nodes will show green in the list.

4. Create Pool
Both two nodes 10.94.100.121 and 10.94.100.122 will be added into this pool.

5. Create Virtual Server

Source Address Translation has been configured use Auto Map. The SNAT automap feature automatically selects one of the systems self IP addresses (typically a floating self IP address of the egress VLAN), and maps it to the original IP address or addresses that you specify during SNAT creation. When you use this feature, you do not need to explicitly specify a translation address.
